§ 106-38. Service pipe.

  • (a)

    Water main to curb stop . That portion of the water service pipe from the water main to the curb stop box and shutoff shall be owned and maintained by the city. These service pipes shall be made of type "K" copper meeting the requirements of ASTM specification D-2666. For two-inch or larger services, PVC C-900 DR 14 may also be used. All service lines shall be capable of withstanding an internal pressure of 160 pounds per square inch.

    (b)

    Curb stop to meter . That portion of the water service pipe from the curb stop box and shutoff to the meter shall be privately owned and maintained. These service pipes shall be made of either type "K" copper meeting the requirements of ASTM specification D-2666 or for up to two inches in size may be made of high density polyester resin (HDPR) with a factory installed tracer wire, hydrostatic design basis of 1600 psi @ 20°C and dimensional standards of copper tube size (CTS), controlled outside diameter, EndoTrace or approved equal, with stainless steel liners at all fittings. For two-inch or larger services, PVC C-900 DR 14 may also be used. All service lines shall be capable of withstanding an internal pressure of 160 pounds per square inch.

    (c)

    Locating HDPR Pipe . Use of high density polyester resin pipe for service lines requires the installation and connection to both a B-box with tracer wire terminal and a tracer wire access box located outside the building and shall be capable of detection with city equipment and meeting the advance approval of the plumbing inspector.

    (d)

    Locating PVC C-900 Pipe . Use of PVC C-900 DR-14 pipe for service lines requires the marking with a continuous wire or metallic tape with connection to the shut-off valve and a tracer wire access box located outside the building and shall be capable of detection with city equipment and meeting the advance approval of the plumbing inspector.

    (e)

    Minimum sizes . No water service pipe or tap for any building shall be less than one inch internal diameter, and pipes supplying sill cocks or hydrants outside of buildings shall not be less than one-half inch internal diameter.

    (f)

    Closing and capping . Plumbers installing water service pipes shall close the curb shutoff and leave it closed upon completion of their work, and when pipes are laid to the curb only, they shall close the end of the pipe or fitting with a tight metal plug or cap.
